Ask any Freemason this question, and you’ll probably get a different answer from each one of them! Freemasonry means different things to each Brother.

In the past we Freemasons have not always done such a good job of defining just what it is we do, or who we are, but that’s often because the answers non-Masons are looking for are really too complicated.

Freemasonry (or just plain Masonry, for short) is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values. It is one of the world’s oldest and most popular fraternal organizations. Its members are taught its precepts by a series of ritual dramas or passion plays to use another term, all of which which follow ancient forms, and use stonemasons’ customs and tools as allegorical guides and are often based on Biblical stories and lessons.

Freemasonry is perhaps the most misunderstood, yet widely popular, “secret society” the world has ever known. And the most visible one. Some would say it’s a personal development program which promotes family and community values. Others would describe Freemasonry as a chance for both social interaction and “philosophical brainstorming”.

To most of us Freemasonry is all of that, and more.
